Lost passport
What to do if you've lost your passport, inside or outside the UK. This information is only applicable to University of Bristol students.
If you are in the UK
- Report it to the police and get a police report/ crime reference number
- Apply for a new passport at your embassy or consulate. You can find details of your embassy in the UK on the Foreign & Commonwealth Office list
- Update your eVisa account with your new passport details. Failing to do so may cause questions on the border on why your eVisa passport details do not match the details of your passport you are presenting at the border.
If you are outside the UK but not in your home country
- Report your passport as lost or stolen to the local police and obtain a police report
- Contact your embassy or consulate to obtain a temporary passport to return to the UK. Embassies have different processes to enable you to travel, so contact your embassy to find out what you need to do
- Update your eVisa account with your new passport details. Failing to do so may cause questions on the border on why your eVisa passport details do not match the details of your passport you are presenting at the border

If your passport contained your visa (vignette)
Please contact us for advice if you have lost your passport with your visa (vignette) in it.
UKVI has recently announced that from 15 July 2025 you may not get a vignette in your passport if you apply for a study or work visa. Instead, you will need to create a UKVI account and get access to your eVisa before you travel to the UK.
You’ll still get a vignette if you apply as a dependant for any other visa or as a main applicant for visas other than study or work.
