Holiday and Hazardous Activities
I would like to take a period of holiday during my business trip, will the University travel insurance cover this?
- The University travel insurance doesn't provide cover for periods of holiday. This is because it is, according to HMRC, considered to be a taxable benefit.
- Personal travel insurance must be arranged by the traveller for any periods of holiday. This is at the expense of the traveller and can't be reclaimed via expenses.
- It is important you check your personal travel insurance carefully as often it only covers trips that start and finish in the same place. Please declare this fact to your insurer to ensure your insurance cover is not invalidated.
- Please note, for periods of holiday, there is no cover provided by the University's travel insurance. Consequently your personal travel insurance would have to cover any University owned equipment you have taken with you. Otherwise, the cost of replacement would fall to your school/department.
Note: A holiday is defined as a trip involving an overnight stay, a flight and/or a train journey away from the usual residence. The usual residence would be the main accommodation being used for the University trip.
Can the Insurance office recommend an insurer who can provide personal holiday insurance?
No, as much as we would like to help, we are not allowed to recommend an insurer. We are not registered insurance brokers and therefore cannot provide individual insurance advice.
Adventurous or hazardous activities
There is no cover for adventurous or hazardous activities undertaken in leisure time whilst on a University trip.
More information can be found on the Safety and Health services webpage under adventurous or hazardous activities.
