Over 30 PhD and EngD students gathered at We the Curious on Wednesday 29 January 2025 for an engaging World Café Knowledge Exchange event

The students, representing nine UKRI-funded Centres for Doctoral Training in the Faculty of Science and Engineering (see further information), came together from different stages of their doctoral journeys. In an open and collaborative atmosphere, they shared experiences and insights, sparking inspiration and fostering mutual learning.

The event was structured around eight core topics: networking and conferences, building your public profile and publishing papers, research and self-management, skills development and teaching, career progression, writing up, public engagement, and wellbeing. Each topic was explored in depth, with table facilitators guiding discussions and ensuring everyone had the chance to ask questions, delve into key issues, and exchange practical advice.

The day kicked off with a delicious lunch on the top floor of We the Curious where participants could enjoy panoramic views across the city and Bristol Cathedral, albeit under slightly cloudy skies! In structured 18-minute rotations, discussions took place, and key takeaways from each table were recorded by the facilitators. At the close of the event, table leads presented a selection of top tips and highlights, consolidating the key lessons shared throughout the afternoon.

The experience was topped off with exclusive after-hours access to the museum’s exhibits, providing a great end to an enriching day of learning and connection.

An ISCE CDT attendee said: “It was great to meet other CDT students and share experience[s]”, while a first-year student from the EngBio CDT enjoyed: “meeting students from other CDTs, discussions that were specific but also open enough for us to discuss what interested us.”

Thank you to all those who organised the event, facilitated the table discussions, and participated in the networking opportunity. Thanks also go to Dr Pam Lock, our event facilitator, and We the Curious for hosting us.
