Programme details

Spend 8 weeks living and working in the States on a Summer Camp. Earning money, growing your skills, and making a difference to the lives of children and young adults. 

With BUNAC you will earn up to $2,250 with meals and accommodation included at camp. You can work as a Camp Counsellor, Additional Needs Counsellor or Activity Specialist. 

You must speak to BUNAC to understand the full application process.

Eligibility

You will need to have some childcare experience to work at a summer camp. This can come in many forms, and many people have relevant experience that they can call on without realising it. While not an exhaustive list, here are some examples of what would count as childcare experience:

  • Being a leader in the Scouts, Beavers, Brownies, Cubs or another youth group.   
  • Helping, coaching or mentoring at a school club, after school club or sports club.  
  • Tutoring experience, TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) or similar.  
  • Any volunteering that you’ve done where you’ve worked with young adults.

To apply for Turing funding to support you on this programme, you must:

  • be an undergraduate student at the University of Bristol and not in your final year

If you are not eligible to apply for Turing funding, you can still apply directly to BUNAC

Language requirements

There are no language requirements for this programme.

Academic requirements 

You do not need to meet any academic requirements to take part in this programme.

Costs

The programme fee is £399 which covers:

  • pre-arranged summer camp placement
  • accommodation and meals in a summer camp
  • step-by-step visa help
  • embassy visit help
  • pre-departure, in-country and post-programme support

You will need to organise and pay for all other costs, including:

  • return international flights 
  • vaccinations, visa, DBS check and health form
  • support funds - you must be able to show that you can access $800
  • US Embassy Fee (usually $185)

Funding

Turing funding 

There are limited places on this programme that will be supported by Turing funding. 
There are two rates available:

Standard rate (formerly Turing rate A)

  • Cost of living grant: £1,064 for a 56-day programme.

Eligibility: All undergraduate students not in their final year.

Enhanced rate (formerly Turing rate B) 

  • Cost of living grant: £1,288 for a 56-day programme.
  • Travel grant: up to £745 (as evidenced by receipts).
  • Readiness to travel costs: reimbursed at actual cost (evidenced by receipts).

How to apply

You must apply for a place with BUNAC directly through their website. You can apply for Turing funding via the button below from 28th November until 11.59pm Sunday 26th January. You do not need to have a place confirmed with BUNAC in order to apply, but priority will be given to those who have registered their interest with them (e.g. have registered for an information session).
