Kelly and Crouch

This drawing can be found on the back of printed music for The Adieu, a duet interpolated into a 1798 production of the comic opera The Maid of the Mill. It was first shown in London in 1765 with music arranged by Samuel Arnold. The sketch is thought to be of singers Michael Kelly and Anna Maria Crouch. Dublin-born Kelly studied and performed in Italy and Vienna and worked with Mozart. In 1787 he moved to London, where he worked at the Drury Lane and King’s Theatres, and met Crouch who became his partner both on and off stage.
