INTRODUCTION TO CELEBRATION 2001
FOREWORD INTRODUCTION HIGHLIGHTS DIARY OVERVIEW

10 October 2001 marks the 125th anniversary of the founding of University College, Bristol, which paved the way for the establishment of the University of Bristol 33 years later. Celebration 2001 will commemorate this occasion throughout the autumn term.

A series of high-profile public lectures forms the backbone of the programme, the theme of which is 'opportunity and diversity', not least because the new College was the first higher education institution in the country to admit women on an equal footing with men. The topics to be addressed include equal opportunities for women, minority ethnic issues, disability rights, sexual diversity, and widening participation in education, details of which can be found in the Highlights. Each lecture will be followed by a drinks reception where an exhibition appropriate to the topic under review will be on display.

The main programme includes many music and drama events specifically chosen to fit the theme, but a larger range of University events also comes under the Celebration's umbrella. These can be found listed in the Diary.

All events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise stated.
