Diversity in Health Research in Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire (BSW) – join the conversation

13 June 2024, 9.30 AM - 13 June 2024, 12.30 PM

online

We know that barriers to involvement in health research are barriers to providing excellent healthcare. Research-active staff are invited to a new workshop to look at how we can involve more diverse population groups in research and how this can help to address health inequalities in Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire (BSW).

The workshops will take a fresh approach to diversity and inclusion, viewing it through the lens of cultural competence. There will also be an opportunity to have a facilitated open and honest conversation across organisational boundaries to share challenges and successes.

The session will include:

  • Models of cultural competence
  • History of medical mistrust and health inequalities
  • Diversity profile of the population of BSW and its under-served groups.
  • Discussing challenges to diverse participation in our research
  • What’s within our power to change? Sharing insights and addressing barriers.
  • Exploring inclusive language and the concepts of psychological safety, anti-racism, trust and agency
  • Growing broader health literacy in communities
  • Collecting EDI data and evidencing change

The workshops are open to all staff in any organisation across BaNES, Swindon and Wiltshire who have a role or an interest in health and care research. They are organised by NHS BSW Integrated Care Board and partners through NHS England's Research Engagement Network (REN) programme and they will be devised and led by cultural competence experts at Staff College.
