Pioneers, school pupils and poetry

6 October 2022

In summer 2022, we teamed up with a poet, a theatre maker and a community workshop facilitator, to deliver a project focusing on the contribution of women in health. Listen to our podcast for National Poetry Day (6 October) with Jo Stubbs, Elizabeth Blackwell Institute Public Engagement Associate, in conversation with Poet, Rachel Bentham, reflecting on these creative sessions.

We worked with over 50 primary school children, and 10 parents, and used the stories of Elizabeth Blackwell and Henrietta Lacks to spark conversation. Project poet, Rachel Bentham, wrote three poems in response to our sessions, which she reads during the podcast. The public engagement project was made possible thanks to Heritage Schools funding and Temple Quarter Engagement funding.

The three poems by Rachel Bentham are titled:
  • What’s In A Name
  • Hela, for Henrietta Lacks
  • That Ooh Feeling
