Award criteria and eligibility
General eligibility consideration
- self nominations are not accepted
- members of staff/teams who have won a Bristol Teaching Award within the last 3 years are not eligible for shortilisting in the same award category. View the Results - Archive for details on prior winners.
- you may only nominate a person or team once per award category however, you may nomiate a person or team for as many awars categories as they fulfil the criteria for. Duplicate nominations will be counted as a single nomination.
Outstanding Personal Tutoring Award – Individual
- provide space and time for students to reflect on their values, identity and ambitions, both in a university context and looking to the future
- seek to build students self-awareness, initiative and autonomy
- encourage students to reflect on their academic experience and personal development, for example, by supporting well-being, resilience, openness, and learning from failure
- nurture a sense of belonging and inclusivity
- create opportunities for students to develop skills alongside and beyond their course, for example, employability or collaboration
Inspiring and Innovative Teaching Award - Individual
Six awards, one per faculty, will be made to a member of staff that teaches and who meet one or more of the following criteria.
- "go the extra mile" to inspire curiosity, creativity and a love of learning through their teaching / support of student learning
- be innovative and dynamic in the way that they teach, for example: by introducing different forms of assessment
- creates an active and interactive learning environment inclusive of all learners
- allows room for experimentation, risk taking, and learning from making mistakes
- impacts teaching beyond their own, for example by tackling big themes in the University strategy, such as programmes for a changing world, research-rich curricula, belonging, sustainability and/or decolonisation
Postgraduate students who teach are eligible for nomination under this award category.
Inspiring and Innovative Teaching Award - Team
One award will be made to a team of staff* who inspires students through their teaching and who meet one or more of the following criteria through collaboration:
- "go the extra mile" to inspire curiosity, creativity and a love of learning through their teaching / support of student learning
- be innovative and dynamic in the way that they teach, for example: by introducing different forms of assessment
- creates an active and interactive learning environment inclusive of all learners
- allows room for experimentation, risk taking, and learning from making mistakes
- impacts teaching beyond their own, for example by tackling big themes in the University strategy, such as programmes for a changing world, research-rich curricula, belonging, sustainability and/or decolonisation
Cross faculty teams are eligible for nomination under this award category.
*Teams nominations should include a clearly defined staff group and a robust illustration of how everyone within that team has contributed.
Outstanding Support Award - Individual
- work with staff and/or students to enable excellent teaching, learning or student support
- be approachable and supportive and offer high quality advice and guidance
- support and empower students to reach their potential and thrive both personally and academically
- contribute to the creation of a flexible, inclusive and dynamic learning environment across the physical and digital campus
Outstanding Support Award - Team
- work with staff and/or students to enable excellent teaching, learning or student support
- be approachable, supportive and offer high quality advice and guidance
- support and empower students to reach their potential and thrive both personally and academically
- contribute to the creation of a flexible, inclusive and dynamic learning environment across the physical and digital campus
Outstanding Research Supervision Award - Individual or Team
- help to create a stimulating research environment
- encourage students to innovate and push boundaries
- be approachable and supportive and offer high quality advice and guidance
- help students develop as researchers, for example, by nurturing curiosity, persistence, and a love of learning
- encourage students to become members of their scholarly communities
Vice Chancellor's Award for Education
From the 11 award winners, one person or team is selected by the Vice-Chancellor to receive the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Education in recognition of their exceptional contribution to education and enhancement of the student experience at the University.
