25 September 2024, 2.00 PM - 25 September 2024, 3.30 PM

Havi Carel and Dan Degerman

G.16 Cotham House, Bristol.

The Centre for Health, Humanities and Science will be joined by members of the Wellcome Trust-funded EPIC project, Prof. Havi Carel (Principal Investigator) and Dr. Dan Degerman (Co-Investigator), for a joint event exploring 'Epistemic Injustice, Silence, and Speech'.

Abstract
We normally take it to be the case that speaking our minds is good and keeping silent may be a sign of oppression. In this talk we suggest that the roles given to speech and silence are more nuanced and context dependent, and that an injunction to 'break the silence' may be in infringement, rather than supportive, of one's identity, epistemic integrity and confidence.
