Bristol Co-hosts Discussion Workshop on Private Museums in China

11 January 2022

Prof Graeme Were and Dr Juan Zhang are participating in a workshop on Friday 14 January 2022 to discuss the boom in private museums in China and Asia. They will be joined by scholars working in Peking University, East China Normal University and the Chinese National Museum of Ethnology and elsewhere in Asia and Europe.

The workshop is organised to respond to the exponential growth in museum projects in Asia over the last decade. The workshop will explore typologies of private museums, the socio-economic context for their growth, and the relation between private and public spheres in a late socialist context. Debate will also focus on the implications of the private museum boom: from considering collectors, consumers and amateur enthusiasts; to the role of private museums in rural and urban planning.

The workshop is part of a larger project run by Prof Graeme Were through his AHRC Network Grant 'The Rise of Private Museums and Heritage in East and Southeast Asia.'
