The SWEPT2 project is investigating the uses of Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) based fluid dynamics modelling to improve the way that the wakes of turbines are modelled. This exciting new technology is a faster, less expensive and more scalable alternative to the general-purpose software that has previously been used and could aid the future design of larger wind turbines for offshore use as well as better predict wind farm failure.
The UK is already one of the global leaders in offshore wind technology and such improvements to the design process may result in lower carbon emissions, better designed wind farm layouts and reduced cost to market for industry as well as a potential reduction in consumer prices.
