Diagnostic accuracy of the BuRN-Tool

This study is evaluating the use of the BuRN-Tool, a clinical prediction tool to identify maltreatment associated with burns and scalds to children presenting to emergency departments.

CACH Team: Alan Emond (Bristol PI), Linda Hollén (statistician), in collaboration with Cardiff University (CI= Prof A Kemp)

The BuRN -Tool was developed from review of the evidence, and an epidemiological study of children’s burns presenting to emergency departments (ED) in 2008-2010. A validation study was carried out in 2014-15, using prospectively collected data from 1327 children with burns, and a cut off score for ‘concern’ was defined. A mixed methods implementation study is now utilising a before and after design to measure the change following use of the BuRN Tool in EDs in England and Wales, in collaboration with PERUKI, the children’s ED research network.  Quantative outcomes are being collected from NHS and social services databases, and qualitative data gathered on professionals’ experience of using the BuRN Tool
