Webcams

www.eyeball-surfcheck.co.uk

The daddy! Internet surfcams do not come better than this! Updated daily at stupid o'clock in the morning if there is surf in North Devon then you'll find a picture of it on this webcam  Also sign up for their forecast for probably the most accurate forecast for the most reliable stretch of surf within reasonable driving distance from Bristol.

www.croyde-surf-cam.com

The original Devon surfcam (?). This must have been one of the first sites to offer a daily e-check on the surf but it seems to have sold out a bit recently and now spends its time trying to persuade everyone that one foot slop is an acceptable wave. Only really included it here because they have an extensive range of entry level boards ie cheapish boards that won't break your head or themselves in the inevitable accidents that occur when you're starting out. Worth checking out if you're looking for somewhere close by to pick up your first board or if you're looking for some motivation to get down (somehow they always get a good picture!).

Forecasts

www.a1surf.com/surfcheck-sw-forecast

Widely used forecast with a slight tendancy for undue optimism this should be stop number one when making the call on a trip to the Southwest. But note that the prediction is for the west of Cornwall so you can usually expect to halve the forecast wave height for North Devon.

www.magicseaweed.com

Every year someone rocks up at FRESH talking about the 22ft swell coming in at the weekend and asking if there's going to be a trip. Magicseaweed is to blame! Predicts open ocean swells not beach break wave height so forecast is always larger than the wave on the day. Useful indicator of whether there will be a wave of sorts but needs to be checked against a good weather forecast site for the winds and make sure you pay attention to the wave period (8 is acceptable, 10 or over is good, anything below 8 go windsurfing instead).

www.a1surf.com/surfcheck-soulsurfer

Another one from A1 haven't used this one much recently but used to be one of the standards. Report is fairly general so can be lacking in detail but the guy doing it has a lot of experience so always worth checking for a second opinion.
