The Mexican Society :: Membership

The Mexican Society is a member of the University of Bristol Union's societies. As such, we aim to promote the Mexican culture amongst not only students, but also anyone who chooses to join our community. These are the following cultural activities we offer.

Salsa Classes

Salsa classes are back! As always they are open to everyone interested. Of course, there is a discount for Mexican Society members, but we would like to encourage everyone to come. Nigel and Gemma will be giving the classes once more - a great duo!

Latin night follows for those ready to practise their Salsa skills.

Spanish Classes

We are providing Spanish workshops at the Union, open to everyone interested. Again, there is a discount for Mexican Society members. The classes will be organised as follows:

Beginners
Wednesdays, 5:00 - 6:30 pm
10C/10F Student Union
Teacher: Edgar Cervantes
Class aimed at people new to the Spanish language.

Improvers
Mondays, 4:30 - 6:00pm
MR6L (sixth floor) Student Union
Teacher: Edgar Cervantes
This class is geared towards practising reading, grammar, and pronounciation. This class will be taught nearly completely in Spanish to help people to get used to hearing the language.

Advanced
Tuesdays, 5:00 - 6:30pm
MR6 (sixth floor) Student Union
Teacher: Ma. Cecilia Garces
This class is taught entirely in Spanish. Conversation will be practised by talking about subjects that interest the class. Grammar nevertheless will be also improved. Again, to help get a feel of how Spanish is spoken by others and also a bit of the culture, films and songs will be used as teaching aids.

Tango Classes

We also have links with Osiris who gives Tango Lessons. As such, there is a discount for Mexican Society members, but we would like to encourage everyone to come. This is your chance to learn a truly captivating dance that always attracts many learners. The details are as follows:

Mexican Film Evenings

We would like to share Mexico's (and the Spanish speaking world's) cinema with our members. Don't miss out on this chance to see films which you might have missed in the cinema; we use a proper projector and sound system, so its not like just watching films on your TV at home.

In past years, we have shown 'Y Tu Mama Tambien' and 'Amores Perros' amongst others. This year we would like to show a great deal more. Please keep an eye on the Events page to find out when our next showing.

Helping Street Children in Mexico

Mexico is in much need of help and aid in various areas, and as a Mexican society we have vowed to play a part. As of this year we will be sending a proportion of our money to a children's home in Puebla called IPODERAC. We will be organising fundraising events thouought the course of the year, and we also hope to send a few volunteers in the Summer, so if you are interested, we will be sending more information later.

IPODERAC is an independant home for street kids south of Mexico City. As such, it is funded in large part by its own cheese factory, but also from donations. This is where we hope to make a difference - there are various projects which need financing, and we hope to enable at least one of them to go ahead. So we wish to thank you all in advance for the contributions you make just by being a member.
