Who We Are ::   学会资讯                                                                               University of Bristol Chinese Society

East meets West meets East. Maybe that's the only way to accurately describe the University of Bristol's Chinese Society. Currently the largest international student society in the university, Chinsoc, as it's fondly known as, has prided itself as a cultural meeting point for people from all over the world for over 60 years.

Through a wide range of activities, the society unites the Chinese diaspora from Asian countries such as Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, China, as well as Chinese people born in other parts of the world. It's also a multi-racial society, with some members hailing from places such as Vietnam, Japan, England and USA.

"Chinsoc events allow all Chinese people to come together and celebrate festivals. It's also a way which we help freshers settle into university life, and gives members the opportunity to interact with one another," says Sarah Ho, President of the 2003/2004 Chinsoc Committee. "We also want to help promote our culture to the people in Bristol as I do believe that it's something worth sharing."

Annual events include guided tours of Bristol and Bath, disco nights, and trips to shopping villages.  And that's not counting the numerous dinner gatherings to celebrate the traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Mid-Autumn Festival and the Chinese New Year. To cater to Chinese culture aficionados, the society also holds Mandarin and calligraphy classes, and our very own Culture Night.

Chinsoc is also proud to be affiliated with the university's Chinese Lion Dance Troupe. Lion dance is a traditional Chinese art that dates back thousands of years, and the Chinese believe that the dance brings good luck and drives away evil spirits. Performances by the troupe are often the highlights of many university and Chinsoc events.

The Chinese have a saying (as we always do): 老黄卖瓜,自卖自夸. It usually alludes to how one tends to disbelieve someone when he's singing his own praises. Don't believe the hype? Then come and experience Chinsoc for yourself. Enquire at tw2745@bristol.ac.uk on how to join or for more information about Chinsoc activities.
