This session
will concentrate on what it means to be hearing, and what people think it means to be
"deaf" or "hearing". Perhaps
the most important reading for this unit is the set of course notes that are used in
conjunction with an undergraduate unit that covers some similar issues. These course notes are available on the protected
CDS WebPages. We will discuss the
implications of the facts and ideas that are contained in these notes, but you should find
that the notes fill in any gaps that you have in your knowledge of certain areas of
"deafness".
At any time it might be worth doing a web search for the topic you
are interested in. You never know what you
might find. There are some useful Web Sites for Usher Syndrome (try
"www.boystown.org/deafgene.reg/usher-sx.htm") and Tinnitus. Dont get too distracted, though
.
