Session 7:  Deaf Social Life and Lifestyle

This text is drawn directly from the DSiP course and previous Deaf People in Society course.  It will be updated shortly from the national project on Deaf People Information and the Community and from Sign On Europe.

This is a long section which begins to describe some recent research on the British Deaf community.  When we first carried out research work on this topic (1980), the reaction of deaf people was that they had never been asked questions about their lives before.   They were surprised that people should be interested.  Although we do not know all the answers, there has been considerable research since that time.  In this part, we expect you to be able to describe some of the characteristics of deaf people who are members of the community - in terms of the requirements for membership as well as the socio-economic and employment characteristics of the members.  You should also be able to describe the social structure of the community as seen in inter-club and national activities.
