Tola's story

Tola, a Law student, shares their experience of applying to the University of Bristol.

Why did you choose Bristol?

I chose Bristol because it has a good reputation for my course. Also, as I grew up in London, I wanted a change of scenery. Therefore, moving to another city allowed me to flourish as I became very independent. I knew a lot about Bristol before joining as I took part in the ‘Insight into Bristol’ summer school at the end of year 12.

What do you like about your course?

I like the fact that my course encompasses many elements of the Law, which provides a good foundation for my understanding of the subject. Especially, the module ‘Law in Action’ equips me with the necessary tools I need to be a successful student. Sometimes I do find my course content quite challenging as there is a lot of reading involved, I manage this by booking consultation hours with my tutor whenever I am struggling with a particular topic.

Your university experience so far

My experience at Bristol as a person of colour has overall been good. At the beginning, I found it quite daunting as the University is a predominantly white institution. However, it has not drastically affected my ability to integrate into the community. I have still been able to make friends and have a pleasant experience.

To help soothe the transition into university I would strongly recommend joining a cultural society as you will be able to meet people who look like you, which could ease any anxieties you may have.
