University Research Committee interdisciplinary research internships 2015
As Chair of the University Research Committee, I am pleased to announce the inaugural award of the University Research Committee Interdisciplinary Research Internships. This new scheme was launched in December 2014 as a catalyst for promoting new interdisciplinary research across the University, and offers undergraduate students the opportunity to plan and undertake an interdisciplinary research project in summer 2015.
A total of 69 undergraduate students from across the 6 faculties of the University applied for the scheme, each developing a project outline for a 6-10 week project to be co-supervised by two academic members of staff with different research backgrounds. The calibre of applications received was very high, and the University Research Committee will award internships to 17 students, whose project proposals were judged to have significant potential to promote new interdisciplinary research. I would like to congratulate the following students who have each been awarded an internship for summer 2015:

- Ignacio Hernandez Arroyo, Department of Aerospace Engineering, to work with the Schools of Earth Sciences and Physics and the Department of Archaeology & Anthropology;
- Hannah Knight, School of Physiology & Pharmacology, to work with the School of Experimental Psychology;
- Madeleine Lafrate, School of Chemistry, to work with the School of Clinical Sciences;
- Alexander Latham, School of Biological Sciences, to work with the School of Sociology, Politics & International Studies;
- Chloe McLellan, Department of Philosophy, to work with the School of Sociology, Politics & International Studies;
- Jack Pearson, Department of Engineering Mathematics, to work with the Department of Aerospace Engineering and the School of Biological Sciences;
- Ana Maria Rubio Denniss, School of Physics, to work with the School of Biochemistry;
- Louisa Saunders, School of Veterinary Sciences, to work with the School of Cellular & Molecular Medicine;
- Rebecca Saw, School of Experimental Psychology, to work with the Graduate School of Education;
