The award, nominated by the public, was presented by Bristol Mayor, Marvin Rees.  

Professor Nishan Canagarajah, Pro Vice Chancellor (Research) and Chair of the University’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Steering Group said: 'With support from across the University, including our LGBT+ staff network and LGBT+ Student society, and through our engagement with Bristol Pride, we have been able to accomplish so much this year to demonstrate our commitment to diversity and inclusion, including lighting up the Wills Memorial Building in rainbow colours and introducing our rainbow lanyards.'   

Tracy Brunnock, University Diversity Manager, added: 'It’s great to receive this award as it shows that our efforts over the past year have been recognised. There is still work to do and we will continue to work collaboratively with our LGBT+ Staff and Student Networks to build on this success and to sustain a more inclusive work and study environment for our staff and students where individual differences are respected and valued.'

Now in its second year the Bristol Pride Awards showcases some of the great work and people of the city. The University was also shortlisted for the Best Engagement at Pride award and the Best LGBT+ Staff Network award. Our network is run by volunteer members of staff who organise socials, co-ordinate Pride, consult with the University on issues that affect LGBT+ staff and make changes to policies.   

Suzanne Doyle, Co-Chair of the LGBT+ Staff Network said: 'I am so proud that we won Best Employer at the Bristol Pride Awards. The LGBT+ Staff Network was established by volunteer staff members who have worked hard to support LGBT+ equality for staff now and in the future. We're now looking at planning events for LGBT+ history month in February.'

Proceeds from the night went towards supporting Bristol Pride 2017 and the LGBT+ Switchboard, who provide a lifeline to isolated and vulnerable LGBT+ people.
