Over 500 students from the University of Bristol will put their stamina to the test when they raise money for local charity Above and Beyond on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 March.

The Ignit10n event involves teams from various sporting societies at the University who will set themselves a range of self-devised, punishing physical challenges that last for ten hours.

The event has been masterminded by two members of the Women’s Lacrosse Club – Sophia Sullivan, a third year Philosophy and Sociology student, and Milly Belcher, a second year Engineering student.

The students wanted to give something back to the Bristol community, which has become their home away from home over the course of their degrees.

Sophia said: “I see the University’s sports clubs as strong bodies of like-minded individuals who together have the capacity to make a real difference to the local community.”

The challenges include: the American Football team who plan to lift the combined weight of 30 jumbo jets, the Football and Futsal societies who will complete a 10 hour dribbleathon around Bristol, members of the Athletics and Cross Country Clubs who are running the length of England, the Triathlon team who will swim the length of the English Channel and the Netball squad, who will be shooting from the deepest point of the ocean to the highest point of Everest.

The aim is to raise £20,000 for Above and Beyond, a Bristol based charity that works to improve hospital care above and beyond the scope of the National Health Service budget.  The charity funds state of the art equipment and research with the aim of making a vital difference to patients, their families, and the staff who treat them.

This is the first year that the Ignit10n event has featured on the University calendar, and its founders plan for it to become a permanent feature.
