2 July 2014

The University of Bristol’s High Performance Networks Group presented its recent achievements on data centre technologies and software defined networking at EuCNC 2014 in Bologna, Italy, last week.

EuCNC 2014 is a major European technical and scientific conference open to the world research community, sponsored by the European Commission. The conference focuses on telecommunication networks and systems, and is also reaching services and applications.

Professor Dimitra Simeonidou, Head of High Performance Networks, gave a keynote speech on software defined optical switching technologies for next generation data centre and cloud computing infrastructures.

Dr Shuping Peng presented on a novel hybrid optical packet/circuit switched data centre network, a recent outcome of the LIGHTNESS project.

Dr Anna Tzanakaki  presented papers on ‘Planning of dynamic mobile optical virtual network infrastructures supporting cloud services’ and ‘Virtualising converged network infrastructures in support of mobile cloud services’.

The High Performance Networks Group with its partners in the LIGHTNESS FP7 European project also performed an exciting live demo, showcasing novel software and hardware technologies that will dramatically change future data centre infrastructures. This is the first time that real-time traffic through this data centre network has been demonstrated to a conference audience. As a result, it attracted a huge amount of interest and won the best demonstration award among 40 competing EU projects at the conference.
