Celebrations for the School of Biochemistry’s 50th anniversary will continue on 5-6 September with a symposium and social gathering. A series of talks about past and present research in Biochemistry and the School’s history will be followed by a dinner and entertainment at Goldney Hall on the Saturday evening.

Hugh Cornwell, former front man of the rock band The Stranglers, and a Bristol Biochemistry graduate, will be playing an acoustic set as part of the evening’s celebrations. Cornwell, who studied at Bristol from 1968 to 1971, describes his experience at the University as life-changing: ‘I started out studying Microbiology but was able to change to Biochemistry after the first year. My tutor was Professor Freddie Gutfreund. I did far too little work and far too much guitar playing, and my degree reflected this. I had a regular spot playing at Tofenetti’s tavern on the triangle and also at the bistro in the mall in Clifton. I really enjoyed the relationship between the town and the University.’

Bristol Biochemistry turned 50 years in April this year. The School, which has a strong molecular and cellular focus, has produced highly talented graduates who have excelled in varied careers, from academic research including Colworth Medal holders and Fellows of the Royal Society, to business and corporation world leaders.
