Four city pubs will host academics from the University of Bristol during the nationwide three day event, which spans 44 venues across eight UK cities. 

The festival is an opportunity to hear about current research, discuss a range of topics over a drink, and take part in science-based pub quizzes and games.

Each pub will host a different scientific theme. In Big Chill on Small Street talks on the human brain will explore the nature of addiction, how and why we remember, and the link between sleep and mental health.

Our bodies will be examined in the Bavarian Beerhouse on Queen Charlotte Street, where researchers will reveal what happens during a heart attack, why we age, and the reality of risks and prevention of cancers.

Focussing on physics, engineering and chemistry, the Channings Hotel on Pembroke Road will host researchers who will discuss nanotechnology, energy consumption, solar energy, and the future possibilities for morphing cars, planes and wind turbines.

The final theme of planet earth will be addressed by scientists who will compare volcanoes to everyday food products, delve into deep-sea ecosystems, and forecast the future of our planet in The Lansdown on Clifton Road.

Becky Brooks, coordinator of the Bristol event and University of Bristol PhD student, said:  “Following the success of Pint of Science in London, Cambridge and Oxford last year I was very keen to set up the Bristol version.

“I think it's a fantastic way of showcasing fascinating research being done at the University of Bristol. It gives the public an opportunity to discuss the research with the experts and ask any questions they might have. The fact that it's in a pub means it will be very informal and relaxed - I'm very much looking forward to it.”

Pint of Science was started in 2012 by a community of postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers. The festival now collaborates with 14 leading UK universities and institutions and is organised by postgraduate students.

Pint of Science has recently gone international, with Pints of Science now being served up in France, the USA, Switzerland, Austria and the Republic of Ireland.
