Research into building artificial proteins by Dr Ross Anderson, in the School of Biochemistry, has been reported in Chemistry World, published by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The burgeoning field of synthetic biology demands that functional artificial proteins and enzymes seamlessly integrate with natural proteins and substrates.

Using a relatively new methodology called the maquette approach,the study showed that bacteria will process amino acid sequences entirely unrelated to any natural protein to produce a fully functioning cytochrome.
