Science and engineering impact accelerates with seven more EPSRC awards

The University’s EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account has made seven new awards since June 2013, comprising four Knowledge Transfer Secondments, one Proof of Principle and two Proof of Concept projects

The University’s EPSRC Impact Acceleration Account (IAA) has made seven new awards since June 2013, comprising four Knowledge Transfer Secondments, one Proof of Principle and two Proof of Concept projects.

Of the 30 awards made to date, one completed project has already secured further investment from the Technology Strategy Board, Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, ARM Holdings and EPSRC.

Knowledge Transfer Secondments

Five secondments have been awarded in total and most involve both University researchers working in industry and business staff spending time with University research groups. The projects range from 8-12 months.

One recently awarded project builds on the University's shared investments with the BBC through an important exchange of staff to develop new video and television formats.

“The projects supported through the University’s EPSRC IAA show the many ways that researchers can work with business to develop both fundamental and applied research,” said Andrew Wray, Knowledge Exchange Development Manager.

The University’s IAA is distributed through an internal competition and panel review every eight weeks managed by the Research and Enterprise Development Division (RED).

Professor Dave Bull, Knowledge Transfer Secondment for 'Immersive Video Formats' with the BBC.
Dr Anthony Croxford, Proof of Concept award for 'Wireless And Non-Destructive (WAND) Inspection' with Rolls-Royce Plc, E.ON New Build and Technology Ltd and Tenaris Connections Ltd.
Dr Loren Picco, Proof of Concept award for 'Streets Ahead: Fast AFM on the macro-scale' with Polytec, Acutance Scientific Ltd and Virginia Commonwealth University.
Dr Robert Piechocki, Proof of Principle award for 'Practical Evaluation of Combinatorial Channel Signature Modulation' with Toshiba Europe.
Dr Tom Scott, Knowledge Transfer Secondment for 'Diamond-based multi-sensors for measurements of residual radioactivity in defueled reactor cores' with Magnox Ltd.
Dr David Tanner, Knowledge Transfer Secondment award for 'High temperature behaviour of welded joints' with EDF Energy.
