City welcomes 16,500 visitors for university open day

Visitor numbers will peak in Bristol this weekend as 16,500 people flock to the city for the University of Bristol’s latest undergraduate open day on Saturday [14 September]. A wide variety of talks and displays will give visitors a taste of university life and the chance to see for themselves all that the University and city have to offer without having to miss a day of school, college or work.

It follows on from the two open days held in June, with all of the University’s undergraduate schools and departments hosting a full day of interactive demonstrations and information events.

Visitors interested in cellular and molecular medicine will learn about ‘Using stem cells to give the kiss of life’, while those wishing to study Aerospace Engineering will be able to explore the facilities at one of the largest centres for aerospace engineering in Europe.

Visitors will also be able to attend lectures on a diverse range of subjects, including debating the methods for studying management in ‘Studying Management: art, science or circus?’ and how microbiologists investigate the cellular and molecular basis of human disease.

General information talks relating to aspects of higher education such as funding your studies will be available in the Wills Memorial Building along with specific sessions for parents, teachers, careers advisers and mature students.

University accommodation at Stoke Bishop will be open to visitors while students interested in Veterinary Nursing and Veterinary Science courses will have the opportunity to spend the afternoon at Bristol Veterinary School’s Langford campus.

Around 200 student stewards, wearing red T-shirts, will be on hand to help visitors find their way around the University.

Charlotte Wilson, the University’s Student Marketing Manager, said: “Open days like this are the perfect opportunity to find out about the University, meet our students and staff, and see what we have to offer. We decided to hold the open day on a Saturday in response to visitor feedback and we’re pleased that the event has proved extremely popular.”

In order to accommodate the number of people attending the event, the following roads will be closed: Woodland Road (north end), Priory Road and Tyndall Avenue. Woodland Road (south end) will have enforced traffic calming measures in place.

We apologise for any disruption caused during the open day. To alleviate disruption to traffic in the city centre, the University has provided a free park and ride service from the Mall at Cribbs Causeway. Drivers may experience short delays around junction 17 of the M5.

We strongly recommend that visitors travel by public transport or use the University’s park and ride service. There is limited parking available as the University is based in the heart of the city.
