New University of Bristol graduate Lindsey Russell has reached the final stage of a new show to pick the next Blue Peter presenter and is the only woman left in the competition. Lindsey, 22, has had a whirlwind few months with filming for the first rounds of the new ‘Blue Peter – You Decide!’ show taking place between her final exams.

Lindsey, 22, has had a whirlwind few months with filming for the first stages of the new ‘Blue Peter – You Decide!’ show taking place between her final exams.

Not only has she passed her Drama and French degree with flying colours, but she’s also beaten 20,000 applicants to reach the final three.

Ten people were shortlisted for the post, undergoing a series of challenges designed to test some of the key skills a budding Blue Peter presenter will need to succeed.

After four episodes, Judges Myleene Klass, Eamonn Holmes and Ceallach Spellman have whittled the candidates down to the top three – Lindsey, Ben Hunte and Freddie Ingelby – and now, for the first time, viewers will choose who will become the 36th presenter of the world’s longest-running children’s TV programme.

Lindsey’s eaten a deep-fried cockroach, presented on a rollercoaster and even broken a world record – all in two weeks.

She said: “It felt incredible when I got through to the final three. It was genuinely the best moment of my life and I cried like a baby. I was just overwhelmed and so happy.

“It’s been such a full on month with my final exams at university, filming the preliminary rounds, graduating and now the live finals this week! To win would just be amazing. It really would be the best job in the world.”

Voting opens at the end of today’s show, during which the three hopefuls will be meeting Blue Peter presenters Barney Harwood and Helen Skelton for the very first time as they each face their final challenge of the series – taking part in a recording in the Blue Peter studio.

The pressure will be on for them to prove they can cope as they head into the iconic studio and take on one of the famous Blue Peter makes.

Lindsey credits her success so far to UBTV, the student-run television station, who helped put together her show reel and entry. She’s been involved in over 20 of their videos on YouTube to build up experience and presenting skills.

Asked why viewers should vote for her, Lindsey said: “I think CBBC viewers should vote for me because I’d be a great team member and I’m a real explorer. I think I’m something Blue Peter hasn’t seen before. I’m not afraid to make a fool of myself and am really adventurous – I always give 100 per cent to every situation and love to get stuck in."

CBBC viewers can go to the CBBC website and vote online for their favourite finalist from 5.15pm today [22 July]. All voters must be under 16-years-old and more details on the process can be found here: bbc.co.uk/cbbc/articles/blue-peter-you-decide-how-to-vote. The live final is on Thursday.
