University of Bristol academics and support staff were honoured at the inaugural Bristol Teaching Awards ceremony held at the Mansion House, Bristol on 17 June 2013.

The ceremony was attended by award winners, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Sir Eric Thomas, and representatives of staff and the Students’ Union.

A joint venture between the Students’ Union and the University, the Bristol Teaching Awards is a new scheme to recognise and reward those who have made an outstanding contribution to teaching and the provision of support for students.

All taught students and staff were invited to nominate lecturer, member of support or technical staff or colleague in the categories outlined below during April-May 2013. All nominations were considered by a Panel whose membership was constituted in relation to the category of Award being made; all the Panel members were very impressed with the number and quality of the nominations from across faculties.

Fourteen awards were presented in four categories in addition to the ‘Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Teaching’, an award to one individual or team in recognition of their exceptional contribution to education and enhancement of the student experience. This year it was decided to present two  awards, one  to Adrienne Mason from the School of Modern Languages for her ‘incredible academic support to distance-learning students on the MA in Translation’, and the other to the Dental Education Support Team for their ‘outstanding support to students and staff during a period of enormous upheaval’.
