30,000 people to visit Bristol for latest open days

A record number of visitors will be attending the University of Bristol’s latest undergraduate open days on Wednesday and Thursday [26 and 27 June]. Around 15,000 visitors have booked to attend each day, with both prospective students and their guests wanting a taste of university life and the chance to see for themselves all that the University and city has to offer.

All of the University’s undergraduate schools and departments are taking part and will be hosting a number of subject talks and interactive demonstrations.

Prospective Earth Science students will be able to create their own fossils, play a fossilisation video game and explore fossil colour using powerful microscopes in the iconic Wills Memorial Building.

Visitors can also attend lectures on a diverse range of subjects, including one looking at the importance of physiology in medicine and health-related sciences entitled ‘Fizziology is Phun’.

A whole range of other subjects covered include lectures into how electronic technologies have transformed our lives and how economists can influence important policy and address fundamental moral concerns.

General information talks relating to many aspects of higher education, such as funding your studies, will be available in the Wills Memorial Building along with specific sessions for parents and carers, mature students, teachers and careers advisers. There will also be a chance for students to visit University accommodation at Stoke Bishop and some of the city centre accommodation offered to students in partnership with UNITE.

Around 250 student stewards, wearing red T-shirts, will be on hand to help visitors find their way around the University and answer questions.

Lorraine Norman, the University’s Undergraduate Events Officer, said: “Demand for our open days last year was so high that we’ve put on an extra one this month, so we now offer three in total to allow as many people as possible the opportunity to visit Bristol and see what life as a student here would be like.

“Choosing which university to attend and which course to study has never been more important, so we aim to cover as many aspects as possible – whether it’s accommodation options, subject areas, staff, fellow students or simply what facilities we offer.”

In order to accommodate the number of people attending the event, the following roads will be closed from 00.01 until 19.00 on both 26 and 27 June: Woodland Road (north end), Priory Road and Tyndall Avenue. Woodland Road (south end) will have enforced traffic calming measures in place.

We apologise for any disruption caused during the open day. To alleviate disruption to traffic in the city centre, the University has provided a free park and ride service from the Mall at Cribbs Causeway. Drivers may experience short delays around junction 17 of the M5.

We strongly recommend that visitors travel by public transport, use the University’s park and ride service or the shuttle coach service from Temple Meads. There is limited parking available as the University is based in the heart of the city.
