Dr Eric Albone, a Research Associate in the Centre for Public Engagement, has been awarded an MBE for his services to education in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Dr Albone, the co-founder and director of the Clifton Scientific Trust, is also a member of University Court.

He taught science at Clifton College for 17 years, where he was responsible for the first school-based Scientist in Residence scheme. Before that he followed a research career in the USA and the UK where his special interest was in mammalian chemical communication.

Dr Albone founded the Trust to promote science through innovative educational projects.

Two project which the Trust is recognised for are Meet a Medic, in conjunction with Bristol primary schools, and the UK Japan Young Scientist Workshops, bringing post-16 school and college students from Japan and the UK together to work with scientists and engineers in both countries.

He was made an Honorary Fellow of the British Science Association last year and has volunteered with the organisation since 1985, serving it in many capacities including Chair of the Bristol and Bath branch.

Dr Albone said: “Having an award like this is also a great achievement for the Trust and will hopefully bring new recognition for the work we have been doing.”
