University of Bristol awarded Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professorship to host philosopher Luce Irigaray

The University of Bristol has been awarded a Leverhulme Trust Visiting Professorship to host philosopher Luce Irigaray (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, France). Professor Irigaray will collaborate with Dr Maria Fannin in the School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol over a period of two years (2013-2014).

Luce Irigaray is one of the world’s most important contemporary thinkers. Her work has played an enormously influential part in the development of feminist theoretical and Continental philosophical perspectives on difference, materiality, rhetoric, and the formation of an 'inter-relational ethics' between sexes, generations and cultures.

Her most recent book, In the Beginning, She Was, was published by Bloomsbury Press in 2012. Professor Irigaray's collaboration with Dr Fannin will explore how an 'inter-relational ethics' could inform bioethical debates on the uses of the human body in scientific research.

As Leverhulme Visiting Professor, Professor Irigaray will host her international research seminar at the University of Bristol from Sunday 9 to Saturday 15 June 2013 and a public discussion with seminar participants on Friday 14 June 2013 from 5 to 7pm at the Institute for Advanced Studies, Royal Fort House, University of Bristol.

She will also give two public Leverhulme Lectures, the first to be held in Autumn 2013, the second in 2014.
