Bristol Poetry Institute announces competition winners

The Bristol Poetry Institute held its inaugural Poetry Competition for Young Poets (aged 16-19) this autumn. Over fifty entries, received from schools in Bristol and South Gloucestershire, were considered by the judges.

The winner of the competition is George Holt, a student at Bristol Grammar School, for his poem 'Red Moon'.  He receives £100, with £250 worth of books donated to his school library.

There are two runners-up: Belinda Brusoni, a student at Gordano School, for her poem ‘Divine Feminine’ and Patricia Yaker Ekall, Bristol Grammar School, for her poem 'The Fifth Quartet'.  Both runners-up receive £50, with £100 worth of books for their school libraries.

The books have been generously donated by two leading poetry publishers, Bloodaxe Books and Oxford University Press.

Professor Danny Karlin, Director of the Bristol Poetry Institute said: "Many congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all who took part.  We hope to run the competition as an annual event."

The prizegiving will take place today from 6.00pm at 43 Woodland Road.

The winning poems will be posted on the Bristol Poetry Institute website.
