Teams and individuals from both Universities will compete in 17 different sports, all hoping to win and be crowned Varsity Champions for 2012.

The University of Bristol has already edged into the lead after winning last week’s Varsity Football matches, with the men’s team winning 3-2 and the women’s edging it 3-0 on penalties after the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

A Varsity Fight Night took place in the Anson Rooms on March 9, which saw Bristol University beat UWE in all four bouts.

Varsity Day is the biggest event in the varsity calendar, spanning four different venues and attracting over 300 students.

Kelly Howard, Sports Administrator at the University of Bristol’s Students’ Union, said: “There have already been some big varsity events like the football and boxing that have taken place but the number of students taking part on Varsity Day is just amazing. We’re all looking forward to what should be a competitive but fun day.”

The outdoor sports, including hockey, football, lacrosse, rugby league, rugby sevens and tennis are being played at Coombe Dingle from 1pm.

Swimming and water polo will take place at Bristol University’s Swimming Pool within the Students’ Union on Queens Road from 2pm.

The indoor sports of cheerleading, netball, basketball, fencing, squash and chess will be battled out at the Centre for Sport at UWE’s Frenchay Campus from 12.30pm.

The badminton and trampoline competitions will be held at the Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health on Tyndall Avenue from 1pm.

The Varsity events will also raise money for the L’Dub charity which is a BMX club based in Lawrence Weston. L’Dub provides opportunities for young disadvantaged people to get involved in sport. As well as developing and maintaining the BMX track the club also offers equipment loans, coaching and safety advice.
