Autumn Art Lecture Series 2011: Art and Sport

The University's 2011 Autumn Art Lecture Series looks ahead to the 2012 Olympics with six lectures celebrating the relationship between art and sport.

The lectures will run on six consecutive Tuesdays starting at 6pm, in the Reception Room, Wills Memorial Building. Entry is free, all are welcome and no booking is required.  For further information, please see the Public Lectures website or telephone (0117) 928 8515.

Tuesday 25 October
Physical Culture: Sport and Sculpture in Nineteenth-Century Britain (Professor Michael Hatt, University of Warwick)

Tuesday 1 November
Enlightenment in the Field: Stubbs and Sporting Art (Professor Donna Landry, University of Kent)

Tuesday 8 November
Other Spaces: An artist's perspective on elite gymnastics (Leverhulme Fellow at the University of Wales, Newport)

Tuesday 15 November
The Athlete as Artist and Art-Work: Zinedine Zidane on Film (Dr Philip Dine, National University of Ireland, Galway)

Tuesday 22 November
Another Fine Messi: Animation and Sport A Good Match? (Professor Paul Wells, Loughborough University)

Tuesday 29 November
Stilling the Punch: Boxing, Violence and the Photographic Image (Professor Lynda Nead, Birkbeck, University of London)

In addition, there will be a double-bill screening at Arnolfini Art Gallery, Bristol on Sunday 11 December: Zidane - A 21st Century Portrait and The Referees. The films will be introduced by Dr Mike O'Mahony.
