Press release issued: 8 December 2010

The latest exhibition at The Bristol Gallery, showcasing works from the 21st century’s great modern masters, has been put together with the aid of a University intern programme, providing students with a practical insight into the art world.

Every year the Gallery takes on two interns from the University of Bristol.  This year, final year Classics student Frances Forbes-Carbines researched the history of various suits of prints included in the Christmas exhibition, which features original limited editions by Pablo Picasso, Fernand Léger, Wassily Kandinsky, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Le Corbusier, Salvador Dali, Elizabeth Frink, David Hockney, Max Ernst and Henry Moore alongside recent works by celebrated Somerset-based contemporary studio potter Mike Dodd.

A particular feature of the exhibition is a large selection of works from Russian-born artist Marc Chagall’s celebrated Bible series. Completed in 1956, the Bible series was commissioned by the celebrated French art dealer Ambroise Vollard to illustrate the Old Testament in two volumes of 105 etchings.  Subsequently Chagall recalled that “I did not see the Bible, I dreamed it. Ever since early childhood, I have been captivated by the Bible. It has always seemed to me and still seems today the greatest source of poetry of all time.”

The exhibition opens for a private view on Thursday 9 December between 5pm and 8pm, and opens to the public on Saturday 11 December, running until 14 January 2011.
