New guide to diagnosing your health by Bristol doctor

Press release issued: 25 October 2010

A new book, Diagnosing Your Health Symptoms For Dummies® , by experienced family doctor and University of Bristol lecturer, Knut Schroeder is published this month.

The guide is packed with practical and sound advice and will act as a valuable point of reference for anyone who wants to find out when they do and don't need to worry about regarding their health.

In a recent Royal College of General Practitioners’ survey, 95 per cent of GPs said that their patients google their symptoms before visiting a doctor. Popular programmes such as Casualty, Holby City, ER and House have also created high awareness-levels around a gamut of distressing illnesses.

This intense focus on health dangers, general wellbeing, and detecting and diagnosing symptoms is reflected in the fact that NHS Direct receives approximately 8 million calls every year and NHS Direct Online around 21 million visits a year.

However, other internet sites can give confusing and conflicting information and in a Medical Protection Society survey, 82 per cent of health professionals agreed that the internet causes patients undue anxiety – also known as ‘cyberchondria’.

Diagnosing Your Health Symptoms For Dummies® aims to act as a family health bible, providing clear expert advice to allay fears or encourage those with serious symptoms to seek professional advice.

It covers over 100 common, important, potentially serious and often worrying symptoms and emergencies, such as headaches, chest pain, dizziness, fever, bleeding, tiredness and stress.  As well as providing reassurance, the book also includes guidance on how to perform basic physical assessments and a run-through of key first aid techniques.
