Organised by the University’s Graduate Chemistry Association (GCA), around twenty volunteers took part in the two-day project, which involved volunteers taking part in painting, gardening and landscape design, in order to transform some of the club’s land into a garden play area for the children.

To help fund the project, the GCA raised £1,200, through fundraising events and sponsorship, for two community projects. One of these was a smaller project completed at Lawrence Weston farm in September 2009, involving a team of fifteen students and staff, who spent a day completing fencing around a paddock as well as creosoting existing fences and clearing borders and paths.

Nick Gower, Project Leader, from the University's School of Chemistry, said: “The challenges presented us with a great opportunity to give something back to the community, the volunteers all worked tirelessly, and we are delighted with the results.”

The challenges were organised by the Graduate Chemistry Association in association with the University’s Centre for Public Engagement and Business in the Community. The projects were further supported by the Higher Education Active Communities Fund, the Royal Society of Chemistry and B&Q. The ‘Little Monsters’ community challenge took place on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 July 2010 at Sea Mills Boys and Girls Club, Sea Mills, Bristol.
