Although originally conceived as a magazine for staff, Subtext now has an international readership following its success in the CASE Circle of Excellence awards. It will appeal to anyone curious about the lives, personalities and work of academics and support staff at Bristol.

Issue 12 features a selection of people and stories from across the University, including:

• how nature and nurture combine in the glasshouses of the University's Botanic Garden;
• why cockroaches deserve more respect, especially if you work in biodynamics;
• how a ZX Spectrum set a 12-year-old boy in Naples on the path to complexity science; 
• what draws an anthropologist to the forests of Panama every year;
• how a German-born scholar of Russian culture helped to rescue the work of an old master.
