Michael (Mick) Wiffin, a porter at the Wills Memorial Building, passed away suddenly on the weekend of 7 November after a short illness.

Mick joined Site Services as a late porter in July 2007, after spending much of his working life at sea, including 17 years with P&O Ferries. Mick was keen to find work in Bristol to be near family, and was pleased as punch to get a job at the University, as his brother Brian was already employed by Security.

Being a seasoned seafarer, Mick loved to travel, and he had seen most parts of the world several times, but he still enjoyed the chance to visit foreign shores whenever he could. Mick also liked to keep an eye on the progress of West Ham but remained loyal to his local football team – Southend-on-Sea.

Although Mick had only been with us for a couple of years, he was a very valuable member of the team and was always helpful, friendly and polite both to visitors and to staff. Those who knew him will also know he had an excellent, dry sense of humour, which will be sorely missed by everyone at the Wills Building, Site Services and the University.

Mick was not married, so our condolences have been passed onto his family for their sudden and very sad loss.

Liz Lynch, Site Services Manager
