Robert (Bob) Cogan, Senior Porter in the School of Chemistry, passed away in hospital on 31 October 2009, after a short illness.

Bob commenced work at the University in November 1999, as a late-shift porter based at Social Science, following many years working for the Port Authority at Bristol Docks. In 2001 he moved over to the day shift and joined the portering team at Chemistry, where promotion followed and he took the role of Senior Porter.

Anyone who knows Chemistry will also have known Bob; sometimes he could come across as ‘laid back’, but you will also know that Bob knew everything there was to know about Chemistry and the requirements of its occupants. He would do his best to ensure everything was in place to facilitate the smooth running of the building.

Bob was a keen follower of cricket, especially Gloucestershire, and would like nothing better than an afternoon in the Jessop stand at the County Ground watching a few overs of championship cricket. He didn’t rate the one-day stuff; he liked the peace and slow pace of the long game.

Bob was a character with a great sense of humour and will be sorely missed by those who knew him and worked with him. He leaves a hole that will be hard to fill.

Bob leaves a wife, Diane, and three children, and our sincere condolences go out to them at this difficult time. The funeral will take place at 11am on Thursday 12 November at Canford Crematorium.
