Subtext, the University’s magazine, has won two medals in the international Circle of Excellence Awards programme run by CASE, the US-based Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Subtext was selected for a gold medal in the Print Internal Audience Magazines category (having won a silver medal last year) and a silver medal in the Periodical Staff Writing for Internal Audiences category.

Although Subtext was conceived as an in-house magazine, it will also appeal to a more general readership and to anyone curious about the lives and work of academics and support staff at Bristol.

Issue 9 is published today and covers a variety of people and subjects, including:

• How Professor Yongjin Zhang progressed from the Red Guard to the directorship of the University's Centre for East Asian Studies;
• Why Lesley Dinsdale turned her back on research, only to end up co-ordinating the biggest-ever assessment of research at Bristol;
• What fascinates Professors Sally Lawson and Bridget Lumb about the mechanisms of pain, and how they deal with it when they're on the receiving end;
• What 'doing a spot of gardening' means when the person involved is Professor Timothy Mowl.
