Sports Centre hosts bone density screening

13 March 2009

The Sports Centre is hosting a bone density clinic on Wednesday 18 March, where staff can take advantage of reduced rate testing for bone density and fracture risk.

In the UK, one in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 fractures a bone, mainly because of osteoporosis, commonly known as brittle bone disease. Osteoporosis occurs when the rate of bone renewal does not match the rate of breakdown, eventually resulting in weak, brittle bones. Sufferers often do not realise they have the condition until they break a bone. The condition is, however, preventable and treatable.

The Sports Centre is hosting a day of bone density screening by fully qualified professionals, where you can have your bone density and fracture risk tested on a heel ultrasound scanner. The test is being offered at a reduced rate of £25.

For more information, please visit the Sports Centre website. If you would like to book a test, please contact james.rowntree@bristol.ac.uk. The appointment will take approximately 15 minutes and results and advice are given immediately.
