Free MOTs for rabbits

Press release issued: 13 January 2009

Rabbit owners in Bristol are invited to help keep their animal healthy by bringing them for a free health check at the UK's first dedicated rabbit-only clinic.

Rabbit owners in Bristol are invited to help keep their animal healthy by bringing them for a free health check at the UK's first dedicated rabbit-only clinic.

The Rabbit Clinic at the University of Bristol's Small Animal Practice, Langford, will carry out the health checks, which is part of national rabbit week.

The theme for the third annual Burgess National Rabbit Week is 'fibre' and runs from Saturday 24 to Friday 30 January.  The focus will be on spreading the message that rabbits are 'fibrevores', and require extremely high levels of fibre to maintain good dental, digestive, and emotional health and well-being.

University vets Ian Sayers, Sharon Redrobe and Richard Saunders, Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund Resident in Rabbit and Zoo Medicine, are inviting members of the public to bring their rabbit in for a free "Bunny Check".

Sharon Redrobe, Head of the Rabbit Clinic at Langford, said: "Even if your rabbit looks fine, it's still a good idea to bring them in for a quick MOT.

"If your rabbit has any health problems that are still in the early stages with no obvious symptoms, we may be able to spot them and advise on treatment and the best way to look after your rabbit to prevent any future problems."

Members of the public are also invited to a rabbit awareness evening at the Small Animal Practice on Tuesday 27 January.  University vets will discuss general rabbit health and how to avoid many health problems by feeding the right diet.

The awareness evening is free and will feature a short presentation and a question and answer session.  People attending will receive information packs as well as a complimentary sample of Rabbit Excel.

The awareness evening will take place on Tuesday 27 January at 7 pm at the University of Bristol's School of Veterinary Science, Small Animal Practice, Langford, North Somerset.

For further information or to make an appointment for your rabbit's free dental and health check, tel 01934 852422.  Health checks are being held from Monday 26 to Thursday 29 January.
