Over 200 students and 100 local school children will be taking part in Bristol University’s spectacular RAG (Raising and Giving) street procession today, Saturday, 24 February 2007.  The procession helps to raise money for local charities and other worthwhile causes.

The Rt. Hon. the Lord Mayor of Bristol, Councillor Peter Abraham, will open the Procession on the Downs, Parry’s Lane, at 1 pm.  The floats will then proceed down Whiteladies Road to the Triangle, down Park Street and around Broadmead before making their way up Park Street to finish at the Students’ Union on Queen’s Road.

Taking part in the themed procession will be the University’s Chinese Lion Troupe, student bands, a selection of cars and Harley Davidsons, together with a variety of floats decorated by student halls of residences and societies.

Jon Medcraft, RAG Chair, said: "This year we are hoping to raise and give away more money than ever before. There's a great feeling for everyone involved that all the money raised will make a real difference to local causes.

“The procession is also great opportunity for students to showcase their activities and engage directly with the local Bristol community.”

RAG is a University charity-fundraising body that in the past two years has succeeded in raising over £200,000 for local and national charities through student organised events. The event takes place from 1 pm to 4 pm on Saturday, 24 February and is sponsored by Deloitte & Touche, as part of RAG Week 2007.
