Researchers have assessed for the first time the effective radiation dose that a patient receives when undergoing a scan.

New technologies are constantly emerging in medical imaging that mean high quality images can be produced from techniques such as CT scanning faster than ever before. This allows new approaches to be taken in diagnosing problems associated with cardiovascular disease; however, the high radiation doses needed for these new scanning technologies carry their own risks.

Dr Andreas Baumbach and colleagues have assessed for the first time the effective radiation dose that a patient receives when undergoing a scan.
