Seventy budding young sports stars of the future will be at Bristol University's Coombe Dingle Sports Complex on June 21-23 for a three-day programme of sporting fun. The 11- to 12-year-olds have been selected from 22 local primary schools to take part in the Multi-Skills Gifted and Talented Sports Event.

The event is an opportunity for children who are talented in physical education to improve their abilities in a range of skills including hand/eye co-ordination, balance, kicking, strength, agility, jumping, running, power and catching. A variety of approaches, through the theme "children moving and thinking with brilliance" will be used during the activities along with team-building challenges and sophisticated fitness tests to help them develop their physical skills.

The event is being run by staff from the University's Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health and participating schools and is a joint collaboration between the University and Ashton Park School Sports Partnership. University students who have obtained their Community Sports Leader Award through the University's Community Sport Volunteer Scheme will also be helping out. On the final day, some of the University's own sporting stars from the Advanced Sports Squad will be presenting awards to outstanding participants.

Jim Holmyard, Sports Performance Manager at the University and one of the organisers of the event, said: "We are delighted to be hosting this event in collaboration with Ashton Park Partnership. The event is a great way for young local athletes to learn how to make the most of their skills. It's also good fun and a way of helping open up the University to a wide range of local schools. We're very much looking forward to having the children here."
