Bristol University’s Centre for Sport, Exercise and Health has teamed up with one of England’s top league volleyball clubs. The partnership, with Speedwell Volleyball Club, will give students the opportunity to train and possibly compete in the highest league in the country.
As part of the venture Speedwell will play their home matches at the University’s Sports Centre on Tyndall Avenue. Once a week students from the University’s volleyball team will train alongside Speedwell. The training session will focus on developing the student team to try and achieve better results in the British Universities Sports Association tournaments.
For those who are new to the sport the University and Speedwell will also hold ‘learn-to-play’ sessions.
Bob Reeves, Director of Sport, Exercise & Health, said: “We are putting a great deal of effort into improving our performance in a number of targeted sports. By linking our volleyball club with Speedwell, we are providing students with the best possible opportunity to maximise their potential. It is hoped that this will encourage more talented young volleyball players to apply to study in Bristol.”
John Watson, Speedwell chairperson and player, said: “We are very excited about the potential this new partnership brings to both sides. Over the last 30 years Speedwell have accrued a wealth of experience and talent, which we hope some of the young University students can benefit from. The overall ambition is that together we will improve the profile of volleyball in Bristol. ”
Coach, Ivor Paul, added: “I am really keen to see what talent the new term brings. We hope this new partnership benefits not only the students as players themselves but also the University team in the tournaments they play in. We also want to encourage talented students to compete alongside Speedwell players in the National league and keep a strong flag flying over Bristol.”
Speedwell Volleyball club ranked 8th in England at the end of the 2002-2003 season. It currently competes in the English Volleyball Association First Division Prosport National League, the premier league in England.
The first match of the season will be played on Saturday 11 October at the University Sports Centre at 5 pm against Newcastle Staffs. It is free entry and all are welcome.
