Press release issued: 2 June 2003

Stars who made their debut on the stage of the Bristol Old Vic are the subject of this year's summer exhibition at the University of Bristol Theatre Collection.

Stars who made their debut on the stage of the Bristol Old Vic are the subject of this year's summer exhibition at the University of Bristol Theatre Collection which opens to the public free of charge on Monday, June 9.

The exhibition, The A-Z of Bristol Old Vic, features photographs of actors including Daniel Day-Lewis, Peter O'Toole, Patrick Stewart, Leonard Rossiter, Kwame Kwei-Armah and Jane Asher who appeared at the Bristol Old Vic early in their careers.

The display also includes images of those who worked behind the scenes such as the Oscar-winning wig maker, Peter Owen; and photographs taken at special events including a visit by Freddie Mercury and a backstage party attended by Timothy West and Hayley Mills.

Jo Elsworth, Keeper of the Theatre Collection, said: "Choosing the pictures for this exhibition has been so exciting. It really shows how the Bristol Old Vic Company has not only contributed to the cultural life of Bristol, but to stage, film and television worldwide."

This will be a rare opportunity to see these photographs, many of which have not been on display to the public before. They are all unique items drawn from the Bristol Old Vic Archive held at the University of Bristol Theatre Collection, a fully registered museum based in the Department of Drama.

The A-Z of Bristol Old Vic exhibition runs from Monday, June 9 until Tuesday, September 30; Monday to Friday 10am - 4pm (closed Bank Holidays). Admission is free.

The University of Bristol Theatre Collection is based at 21 Park Row, Bristol BS1 5LT. Further details can be found on the Theatre Collection's website or by phoning 0117 9545464.

The University of Bristol Theatre Collection is a fully registered museum and research centre dedicated to the study of British Theatre History, holding a vast collection of original documents, photographs and artefacts from theatres, actors, designers and much more.

The A-Z of Bristol Old Vic contains about 60 images. Further articles of interest relating to individual items on display can be made available on request throughout the run of the exhibition.
